Environmental Requirements

Tongue depressors should be stored in a dry, ventilated, and clean environment to avoid moisture that can cause mold (especially on wooden ones) or metal corrosion. The ideal storage temperature is 18-25°C, and the relative humidity should be kept between 40% and 60%. Storage areas should be away from chemical disinfectants, corrosive substances, and direct sunlight to prevent material degradation or changes in performance.

Classification and Storage

Disposable plastic tongue depressors are typically supplied individually packaged. Unopened, they can be stored in a sterile cabinet or treatment tray. Once opened, they should be marked with the expiration date and used as soon as possible. If a wooden tongue depressor is to be reused, it should be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized at high temperature. It should then be placed upright on a dedicated drying rack or laid flat on a hollow tray to ensure air circulation and prevent bacterial growth. Metal tongue depressors should be sterilized, wiped dry, and stored in a sealed, oxidation-resistant container.

 

Regular Inspection and Maintenance

Regardless of the material, tongue depressors should be regularly inspected for integrity while in storage. Wooden tongue depressors showing cracks or mold should be discarded immediately; plastic ones should be inspected for brittleness due to aging; and metal ones should be checked for signs of oxidation. It is recommended to clean the storage area and reorganize storage quarterly, ensuring that labels are clearly visible.

Proper storage management not only extends the lifespan of tongue depressors but is also crucial for preventing cross-infection. Both medical institutions and households should prioritize this practice.
